Details

Samia Mehrez, professor emerita of Arabic literature in the Department of Arab and Islamic Civilizations at AUC, is the founding director of the Center for Translation Studies at AUC. She is the author of Egyptian Writers between History and Fiction, Egypt’s Culture Wars, The Many Lives of Ibrahim Nagui and A Literary Atlas of Cairo, among others. Her first novel in Arabic, Nadia’s Empire, was published in 2025.

SamBoozies: An Aesthetics of Junk was her first art exhibition, held at AUC’s Falaki Gallery at AUC Tahrir Square in 2022. In 2025, she published a book based on the exhibition with Diwan Publishers, Cairo. In her talk, she will be discussing many aspects of the book as well as sharing many visual images of the artwork.
