Join Adrian Gurza Lavalle, associate professor of political science at the University of São Paulo, for a discussion on Brazil’s transition to democracy and the evolution of the New Republic.
Despite shifts in political leadership, the New Republic saw a steady expansion of democratic politics—not just through elections, but also through the democratization of the state. Civil society played a crucial role in shaping policies, holding governments accountable, and engaging with the state through both contestation and cooperation. However, the rise of the far right to the presidency in 2019 marked a rupture in this trajectory.
This talk will explore the growing influence of civil society and participatory institutions throughout the New Republic, as well as the impact of efforts to suppress activism in favor of state control.
