All three novels—"Granada", "Maryama", and "The Departure"—are available now for the first time in a new, complete translation.
The discussion will be with the trilogy award-winning translator Kay Heikkinen, moderated by ArabiLit editor, translator, and literary critic Marcia Lynx Qualey, who will be in conversation with award-winning translator Sarah Enany, and Mayte Green-Mercado, associate professor of history and Rutgers-Newark Director of Institute for the Study of Global Racial Justice.

Kay Heikkinen

Trilogy translator and academic who holds a PhD from Harvard University. She was previously Ibn Rushd Lecturer of Arabic at the University of Chicago. Among other books, she has translated Naguib Mahfouz’s In the Time of Love; Radwa Ashour’s The Woman From Tantoura; and Huzama Habayeb's Velvet, for which she was awarded the 2020 Saif-Ghobash Banipal Prize for Arabic Literary Translation, as well as Habyeb's Before the Queen Falls Asleep. She lives in Seattle, Washington.
Marcia Lynx Qualey

Sarah Enany
Literary translator and a professor in the English Department of Cairo University. She is a recipient of the Banipal Prize for Literary Translation for her translation of The Girl with Braided Hair (Hoopoe Fiction, 2020). She has translated several operas including the acclaimed sung versions of Les Miserables and Mozart's The Magic Flute into Egyptian Arabic, and Sayed Higab's libretto for the opera Miramar into English. She is also the translator of Witness to War and Peace: Egypt, the October War, and Beyond, The Book Smuggler, and The Jewish Muslim trilogy (all AUC Press).
Mayte Green-Mercado

Holder of BA in European History from the University of Puerto Rico, and a PhD from the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at The University of Chicago, specializing in Islamic Studies. Her research focuses on medieval and early modern Mediterranean history. She teaches courses on Islamic Civilization, Islamic history in Spain and North Africa, and early modern Mediterranean history. Her courses deal with questions of religion, politics, identity, and race and ethnicity in the medieval and early modern periods. She also leads study abroad programs around the Mediterranean.
Her current book project is concerned with histories of displacement, migration, and refugees in the early modern Mediterranean.
