An American in Egypt is a concert of music for orchestra by American composers, performed by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Orchestra, conducted by John Baboukis, professor of music at AUC. It will include a set of five jazzy ragtime compositions by the great African-American composer Scott Joplin, arranged for piano and orchestra with Egyptian pianist Mirette Hanna, and two newly-composed pieces. The first of these, Of the Sun, the Moon, and the Stars, is a short but intense and exciting work on epic themes by Thomas Juneau. The second is A Symphony for Alexandria, by Baboukis, which draws on Greek and Arab music (including a prominent role for the qanun) as well as classical Western musical forms.

Admission is free and open to the public.
