Join us for a virtual book talk with Viola Shafik, editor of the newly released Documentary Filmmaking in the Middle East and North Africa, to discuss how it traces the historical development of documentary filmmaking with an eye to the widely varied socio-political, ethnic, linguistic and cultural contexts in which the films emerged.

The book talk is moderated by Naomi Sakr, professor of media policy at The Communication and Media Research Institute, University of Westminster. 

Some of the contributors of Documentary Filmmaking in the Middle East and North Africa will be joining the book discussion, including:
  • Donatella Della Ratta, associate professor of communications and media studies at John Cabot University, Rome
  • Peter Limbrick, professor and chair of film and digital media at the University of California, Santa Cruz
  • Stefanie Van de Peer, reader in film studies at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh
  • Hanan Toukan, professor of Middle East studies, whose teaching and writings sit at the intersection of international politics, Middle East politics, postcolonial studies, visual cultures and cultural studies.
