Join Joseph Massad, AUC's distinguished visiting professor in the Department of English and Comparative Literature, as he examines the colonial origins of independence, self-determination and national liberation — notions often presented as anti-colonial, yet invented by European colonial settlers. The lecture traces the genealogy of these concepts, the centrality of settler-colonialism to their emergence, and how they came to be adopted by indigenous struggles against colonialism and settler-colonialism.

Distinguished Visiting Professor - Department of English and Comparative Literature

The American University in Cairo

The American University in Cairo has named Professor Joseph Massad a Distinguished Visiting Professor. He received his PhD from Columbia University in 1998. His books have been translated into several languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Turkish and French.

Research Interests

Massad's research focuses on theories of identity and culture, including nationalism, sexuality, race and religion, and the history of settler colonialism.
