Many of the conversations about AI in education center on a narrow set of questions: How does AI work? Is it helping or harming? How do I write a better prompt? These are important starting points, but after three years of global research across six continents, into classrooms, conference rooms, and conversations with practitioners navigating AI from every angle, research is showing us something far more expansive. Groupings of AI literacies referred to as “constellations” are getting more complex and more intentional. Educators are moving from transactional prompting toward genuinely dialogic engagement shaped by identity, positionality, and purpose. In addition, dimensions of AI literacies are revealing themselves as something we both use when we engage with AI and gain in the process of doing so, which means developing AI literacies is not a prerequisite to engaging with AI meaningfully. The two happen together, in the doing.

In this interactive session, Angela Gunder and Josh Herron introduce the Dimensions of AI Literacies, their taxonomy grounded in their longitudinal global research commissioned by UNESCO IITE across six continents. Participants will explore the eight dimensions of AI literacies, experience how they appear in patterned groupings called constellations, and begin identifying which dimensions are already alive in their own teaching and leadership practice. The session also serves as the launchpad into AI Literacies Unlocked, a free, self-paced course where participants will deepen their understanding of the eight interconnected AI literacies dimensions across six modules, culminating in the development of a case example grounded in their own discipline and institutional context.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the eight dimensions of AI literacies and explain why we say literacies in the plural
  • Explain how each dimension functions as both something you use and something you gain through engagement with AI
  • Identify constellations of AI literacies already present in their own teaching and leadership practice
  • Articulate a personal entry point into the AI Literacies Unlocked course
