Generative Artificial Intelligence exploded in 2022 with the release of ChatGPT. Despite its recent release, much has been written about the supposed "long-term cognitive effects" of GenAI on learning and cognition. This session examines the research and evidence, exploring whether using AI leads to negative effects like so-called "cognitive atrophy" and cognitive offload. The session explores how longstanding pedagogical methods and approaches to teaching and learning can offer learners ways to resist the potential negative impacts of AI, while also being able to use the technology appropriately.  

Speaker Biography:
Leon Furze, PhD is a best-selling author and consultant with over fifteen years' experience in secondary and tertiary education. His PhD focused on the implications of Generative Artificial Intelligence for teachers.
