Professor Ahmed El Shamsy
Ahmed El Shamsy (PhD Harvard, 2009) is professor of Islamic thought and chair of the Department of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Chicago, where he has taught since 2010 and has also served as director of undergraduate studies. His research
addresses the intellectual history of Islam, with a focus on the evolution of the classical Islamic disciplines and scholarly culture within their broader historical context. He has published two books, The Canonization of Islamic Law: A Social and Intellectual History (2013) and Rediscovering the Islamic Classics: How Editors and Print Culture Transformed an Intellectual Tradition (2020), and he is currently finishing his third monograph, which traces the birth of Sunnism. He is a director at large of the American
Society for Premodern Asia and the section editor for law for the Encyclopaedia of Islam.
