Over the past decade, the urban geography of Cairo has been in constant transformation. Past and present memories of the urban experience have shifted over time, reshaping how the city is lived and understood. These transformations affect people’s everyday urban experience. The people of the city may adapt with these transformations, yet they may also lose their sense of orientation while walking, driving or loitering in the city they call home.

In this talk, the speakers ask: what does it mean for people when their city is geographically transformed? How do changes in the urban environment shape social life and everyday practices of loitering and movement? What kinds of social urban experiences emerge when the material reality of the city changes? Through the themes of destruction and construction, this talk unpacks these questions to explore how Cairo’s urban transformation has reshaped the urban experience and its relationship to the people of the city.
