Freedom of Information Law: Awaited Legislation and Unchecked Rumors
For many years, Egyptian journalists have been calling for the enactment of a freedom of information law as a safeguard of society’s right to know and as a key tool to confront rumors and misinformation. The government, for its part, has also affirmed the importance of issuing such a law. Yet despite broad agreement, the long-awaited legislation has yet to see the light.

This panel discusses the importance of enacting a freedom of information law, reviews some of the proposals put forward—most notably the draft submitted by the Journalists’ Syndicate—and examines the reasons behind the continued delay in issuing the law despite consensus on its importance.

تنادي الجماعة الصحفية منذ سنوات عديدة بإصدار قانون يضمن حرية تداول المعلومات؛ لما في ذلك من ضمان لحق المجتمع في المعرفة، وكذلك لمواجهة الشائعات والأخبار المغلوطة. والحكومة من جانبها تؤكد أيضًا أهمية إصدار مثل هذا القانون، ولكن رغم اتفاق الجميع، فإن التشريع المنتظر لم يخرج إلى النور بعد.
تناقش هذه الندوة أهمية سن قانون لتنظيم تداول المعلومات وبعض الأفكار المطروحة حوله، لا سيما المشروع المقدم
من نقابة الصحفيين، وكذلك تبحث في أسباب تأخر صدور القانون رغم اتفاق الجميع على أهميته.
