Paradoxes of Pioneering and Concealment in Modern Egyptian Art: A Conversation with Yasser Mongy

In celebration of the retrospective exhibition devoted to the Egyptian artist Chafik Charobim, a guest lecture by Yasser Mongy will address one of the complex issues in writing the history of modern Egyptian art; the intricate relationship between the mechanisms of artistic celebrity-making and the disappearance of several influential artists from dominant academic and historiographical narratives, despite their significant contributions to shaping Egyptian aesthetic sensibility.

Mongy's lecture, “Paradoxes of Pioneering and Concealment in Modern Egyptian Art,” sheds light on the phenomenon of invisibility through historical and critical reflections on the work of artists who once held an impactful presence in their respective periods — among them Chafik Charobim and other artists from his generation and subsequent ones. It examines how the art market, criticism and academic research contribute to reshaping narratives of center and margin. The lecture seeks to highlight the need to rewrite the history of modern Egyptian art from a broader perspective, aiming to address omissions and reveal the unknown and the forgotten.

About the lecturer
Yasser Mongy (b. 1972) is an Egyptian academic. Assistant Professor of art criticism and art history in the Department of Art Education at the College of Education, Sultan Qaboos University, Sultanate of Oman, and Associate Professor of graphic arts at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Helwan University. In 2014, he served as Research and Documentation Consultant at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha.

He is the author of more than 20 published books, most of them on art history, and contributed to the creation of the first Arabic Dictionary of Artistic Terminology issued by the Academy of the Arabic Language in Cairo. Mongy is a two-time consecutive laureate of the Sharjah Award for Arab Plastic Arts Criticism, in addition to multiple awards in graphics, drawing and painting.

He has also played a significant role in organizing and adjudicating major art events in the Arab region, and his articles on art, literature, documentation, heritage studies, and museology have been published widely across Arab newspapers, journals and digital platforms.

في إطار الاحتفاء بالمعرض الاستعادي للفنان المصري شفيق شاروبيم، تُقام محاضرة نقدية بعنوان: "مفارقات الريادة والاحتجاب في الفن المصري الحديث"، يقدمها الناقد والمؤرخ الفني ياسر منجي تتناول المحاضرة إحدى القضايا الإشكالية في كتابة تاريخ الفن المصري الحديث، وهي العلاقة المتشابكة بين صناعة النجومية الفنية وغياب عددٍ من الفنانين المؤثّرين من السرديات الفنية الأكاديمية والتأريخية الرائجة، رغم إسهاماتهم المهمة في سياق تشكيل الحساسية الجمالية المصرية.

   تسلط المحاضرة الضوء على ظاهرة الاحتجاب الفني من خلال إضاءات تاريخية ونقدية لتجارب فنانين كان لهم حضورٌ مؤثرٌ في فترات زمنية مختلفة - من بينهم: شفيق شاروبيم وآخرين من فناني جيله وأجيالٍ لاحقة - مع بيان تأثير سوق الفن، والنقد، والبحث الأكاديمي، في إعادة تشكيل سرديات المركز والهامش. وتطمح المحاضرة لإبراز الحاجة إلى إعادة كتابة تاريخ الفن المصري الحديث من منظور أكثر رحابة؛ بهدف استدراك الفجوات، والكشف عن المجهول والمَنسي.

عن المُحاضِر

 ياسر منجي (مواليد 1972) أكاديمي وناقد ومؤرخ فني مصري. أستاذ النقد وتاريخ الفن المُساعد بقسم التربية الفنية بكلية التربية بجامعة السلطان قابوس بسلطنة عُمان، وأستاذ الجرافيك المساعد بكلية الفنون الجميلة بجامعة حلوان. عمل في عام 2014 مستشاراً للأبحاث والتوثيق في المتحف العربي للفن الحديث في الدوحة (متحف). له أكثر من عشرين مؤلَّفًا مطبوعًا، معظمها في تاريخ الفن، كما ساهم في إنشاء أول معجم للمصطلحات الفنية الذي أصدره مجمع اللغة العربية في القاهرة. فاز الدكتور منجي بدورتين متتاليتين من جائزة الشارقة للبحث النقدي التشكيلي، وكذلك العديد من الجوائز في مجالات الجرافيك والرسم والتصوير. علاوة على ذلك، كان له أدوار مهمة في تنظيم وتحكيم العديد من الفعاليات الفنية العربية، ونشرت مقالاته في موضوعات الفن والأدب والتوثيق ودراسات التراث وعلم المتاحف في العديد من الصحف والمجلات والمنصات الإلكترونية العربية.
