Ceramics are a key component of archaeology, telling us about dating, room use as well as revealing aspects of daily and ritual life. Recording ceramics accurately is crucial to archaeological work. This lecture explores a novel, state-of-the-art way of documenting ceramics using virtual modelling.

Speaker: Cristina Mondin

Cristina Mondin obtained both her master’s degree and PhD in Archaeology from the University of Padua (Italy). Her research focuses on pottery production and distribution during the classical period, with particular attention to Roman and early Byzantine contexts in northern Italy, Egypt, and Turkey. Since 2014, she has co-directed the Kom al-Ahmer/Kom Wasit Archaeological Project (Egypt), and since 2018 she has also coordinated the Amasili House – Rosetta Project (Egypt). Her other project is “Standardisation and Sustainability of Material Documentation in Archaeology: Virtual Modelling and Time Consumption (StAr-Doc)” at the University of Padua, in collaboration with the American University in Cairo and King’s College London. The project seeks to develop efficient and sustainable methods for documenting pottery from archaeological contexts, with a focus on low- and medium-cost tools based on open-access technologies.
