The Center for Migration and Refugee Studies (CMRS) at the American University in Cairo (AUC) warmly invites you to an engaging lecture on the history and current challenges of U.S. immigration policy for African and Middle Eastern Migrants.

Through this lecture, we will discover the evolution of U.S. immigration laws since the landmark 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act, with a special focus on pathways often used by African and Middle Eastern migrants — including the Refugee Admissions Program and the Diversity Visa Lottery.

The lecture will also explore pressing challenges faced under the current administration.
Our speaker, Zefitret (Zefi) Abera Molla, is a doctoral researcher in Political Science at Freie Universität Berlin. She has worked at El Colegio de México and the University of Nairobi, conducted fieldwork with Afro-Mexican communities and Black migrants in Mexico, and previously worked on immigration policy in Washington, DC. CMRS Director Ibrahim Awad will chair this discussion.
