John Dugard, prominent international lawyer and legal counsel for South Africa in the genocide case against Israel before the International Court of Justice, examines how Edward Said’s writings on Orientalism provide an explanation for the colonization and occupation of Palestine and the dehumanization of its people. Although Said did not anticipate that the exterminatory motif in Zionist ideology would culminate in today’s genocide of the Palestinian people, Orientalism does explain the failure of the governments of nations responsible for creating a post-World War II order premised on respect for human rights to take action to halt Israel’s genocide.
