Confronting the Perfect Storm of U.S. Political Polarization
The Sullivan Lounge
AUC Avenue, P.O. Box 74, New Cairo, 11835, Egypt
Details
Join Daniel Brumberg, Scholar of Middle East Politics, for a timely talk exploring the converging social, economic, cultural, social-psychological and institutional forces that have created a “perfect storm” of political polarization in the US.
Intensified by political leaders, this storm threatens the very institutions and rules of pluralist democracy. Beyond outlining a comparative framework for understanding this dynamic, Professor Brumberg will discuss the efforts of grassroots organizations in the US to confront polarization. These include “In Your Shoes” (IYS), a Georgetown University project developed under the creative direction of Professor Derek Goldman, co-director of the Laboratory. IYS teaches theater and performance skills to help young people develop mutual empathy, respect and recognition. A member of the original IYS team, Professor Brumberg will provide a personal perspective on the importance but also the limits of such vital grassroots initiatives.
