Many have realized that conceptual analysis is insufficient to lead to an adequate definition of forgiveness. This has led to what has been called 'the diversity problem of forgiveness'. One solution for the diversity problem consists in identifying a paradigm case of forgiveness. This paradigm case would illuminate something significant about forgiveness and would enable us to explain why other cases of forgiveness are appropriately so-called by seeing their connection to the paradigm case.

There have been many proposals for paradigm cases of forgiveness, and we now apparently face the danger of a new diversity problem: the diversity of paradigm cases. It has been argued that the paradigm should be the most basic case of a given concept.

In this talk, Wassim Sabry will suggest that rather than thinking of the most basic case of forgiveness as a paradigm, thinking about an ideal of forgiveness offers a better way for identifying a paradigm case that would also enable us to see other cases as derivative of it.
