Join a media discussion with AUC faculty experts who will analyze the implications of the upcoming U.S. presidential election on the Middle East and Africa. They will explore the impact on the ongoing war in the region, stability and geopolitical shifts, as well as a look toward the future.

Panelists are Bahgat Korany, director of AUC Forum and professor of international relations and political economy; Sean Lee, assistant professor of political science; Karim Haggag, professor of practice at the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy and Mark Deets, assistant professor and director of Prince AlWaleed Bin Talal Bin AbdulAziz AlSaud Center for American Studies. The moderator is Randa Abul Azm, Al Arabiya Cairo correspondent.

The American University in Cairo

Haggag is a professor of practice and director of the Master of Global Affairs Program at AUC’s School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. He is a career Egyptian diplomat with over 25 years of service in Egypt’s diplomatic corps. Throughout his career, Haggag has served in numerous capacities focusing on U.S.-Egyptian relations, Middle East regional security, arms control and non-proliferation and Arab-Israeli diplomacy.

Founder and First Director of AUC Forum and Professor of International Relations and Political Economy

The American University in Cairo

Korany is the founder and first director of AUC Forum and a professor of international relations and political economy. He holds the honorary professor title at the University of Montreal and has been an elected member of the Royal Society of Canada since 1994. He has also been a visiting professor at prestigious institutions including Sciences Po, Oxford, Harvard and Algiers University.

Assistant Professor of Political Science

The American University in Cairo

Lee is an assistant professor of political science at AUC. His work focuses on minority communities during times of conflict, particularly in Lebanon and Syria. Lee has conducted fieldwork in Lebanon, Turkey, Tunisia, Germany and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He received his PhD from the Department of Political Science at Northwestern University.

Deets is an assistant professor and director of the Prince AlWaleed Bin Talal Bin AbdulAziz AlSaud Center for American Studies. Deets is a social and cultural historian of modern Africa. His research emerges from his diplomatic experience in Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde. Deets also serves as francophone book review editor for the Journal of West African History.

Abul-Azm is a bureau chief at Al Arabiya News Channel Cairo. She began her media career in 1995 and became Cairo bureau chief when the Dubai-based channel launched in 2003. Abul-Azm has covered major political, social and cultural events in Egypt and has produced numerous documentary films. She has also conducted interviews with regional and international leaders, policymakers and artists.
