In Mamluk Cairo, women could circulate freely in the streets and markets. Despite regulations and occasional prohibitions regarding their appearance in public, Cairene women managed to be creative with new trends and fashions, often challenging the religious establishment and infuriating the ruling authorities. Based on a variety of texts, this talk is illustrated with images from artefacts, manuscripts and European drawings and paintings.
