Art is making; this has been the basic definition of art since Aristotle. The complex relation among the maker, the act of making and the made ‘thing’/artwork constitutes the core of art theories and aesthetic philosophy. This talk attempts to interpret Sameh Ismail’s artwork, analyzing his orientation as a maker. Drawing on two philosophical traditions, phenomenology (Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty) and transcendental philosophy (Kant and Ibn 'Arabī), the speakers will engage with Sameh Ismail's artwork addressing the threefold relationship between making, the work of art and the artist.
