Contemporary Egyptian Art History Public Roundtable

For its second public roundtable of the year, the AUC Visual Arts Program is delighted to announce the "Contemporary Egyptian Art History" evening discussion. This public roundtable is organized as a part of ongoing research for the forthcoming scholarly book, tentatively titled "Against All the Odds: Contemporary Art in Egypt (2000-2020)." Building on several attempts by colleagues and artists, the book research will try to extend those different attempts to examine the trajectory of contemporary artistic practices in Egypt, at the turn of the millennium to the present. The chosen timeline focuses on more than two decades that witnessed great political upheavals locally, regionally, but also globally as well, that gave rise to a set of practices that developed and responded to these political, social, and economic changes in ways that created communities of practice and different aesthetic strategies. 

In opening this discussion, the public roundtable hopes to center the experience of artists, practitioners, cultural workers and curators who worked in Egypt during that time and develop a possibility of self-reflection in historicizing those practices while considering the past but also trying to look at the question of the future.
