Can we change the world?
More than ever in the past decades, the power of cogent thought rooted in authentic human experience is appreciated as the ultimate foundation of our highest aspirations: Without the truth – maybe this is Socrates’ deepest political insight (PHIL 2100) – all is nothing. Apparently unavoidable realities imposing themselves on us in the ecological, geopolitical and techno-cultural sphere, therefore, instill a growing desire to again think things through systematically: Asking what truth is and whether one could reach it without reasoning, thus, is an excellent starting point of reflection (PHIL 2010), before facing the question who we actually are: Can we understand the emergence and life of our consciousness in purely naturalistic terms (PHIL 2099)? Or do we need to make room for the idea that it is not the brain but language, which is “the body of thought” (PHIL 5124)? Revolutions indicate that individuals are capable of going beyond their apparent imprisonment in themselves.

But – what is a revolution (PHIL 2117)? And what does it say about us that we are factually capable of them? Does it imply that by changing fundamental beliefs, we can, in a way, change reality? American Pragmatists couldn’t agree more (PHIL 3016). Classical Islamic Philosophers presumably less. But exactly this remains to be seen (PHIL 5122)! It thus sounds like sound advice not to answer questions concerning the nature of reality before we have patiently studied Metaphysics (PHIL 3104) and thoroughly considered philosophical views of what Quantum physics tells us about the world we are in (PHIL 5104) – and desire to change.

If you are interested in systematically thinking these issues through, you should join us and hear about the courses the Department of Philosophy offers in Fall 2023 from the professors teaching them.
