Oral Stories of the 2019 Uprising in Lebanon

Join Sana Tannoury-Karam, Jeffrey Karam and Nizar Hassan in two special events. Discussing their involvement in extensive research on the 2019 uprising in Lebanon and their related contribution to the edited volume The Lebanon Uprising of 2019: Voices from the Revolution (Bloomsbury Publishing, 2022) during two roundtables.

AUC professors Sean Lee and Olivier Schouteden will moderate both events. The first roundtable will take place on Wednesday, March 8, from 1 - 2 pm in P007 Hall (AUC New Cairo) and the second on Saturday, March 11, in the Armenian Hall (AUC Tahrir Square), from 5:30 - 7 pm.

By bringing together scholars, researchers, and activists who were all closely involved in the 2019 uprising in Lebanon, these roundtables will provide a diverse and immersive exploration of a recent event whose causes and consequences illuminate the situation of Lebanon today and shed light on the current socio-political dynamics in the Middle East at large. The 2019 uprising in Lebanon is part of a larger movement of contestation that has triggered political movements and shaped governments since the Arab Spring and beyond. These roundtables are also a rare opportunity for the audience to ponder the intersections between cutting-edge scholarship and real-life experience. The variety of academic and professional backgrounds of the participants grounds these events in an interdisciplinary approach that is compounded by the organizers’ dual focus on political science and history.

Sana Tannoury-Karam (Ph.D.) is an Assistant Professor of History at Lebanese American University. She is a historian of the modern Middle East, writing on the intellectual and cultural history of the Arab Left. She is a EUME fellow at Forum Transregionale Studien (Berlin) and a Research Affiliate at the Center for Global History, Freie Universität (Berlin).

Jeffrey G. Karam (Ph.D.) is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the Lebanese American University. He is currently a Research Fellow with the Global Scholarly Dialogue Programme of the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung, affiliated with the Forum Transregionale Studien Europe in the Middle East-The Middle East in Europe (EUME) program and the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Politics at Freie Universität (Berlin)
