AUC Press, in collaboration with AUC Tahrir Cultural Center, celebrates the life of Egyptian Nobel Laureate Naguib Mahfouz on his birthday, 11 December 2022.

The celebration will begin with the 25th Award Ceremony of the Naguib Mahfouz Medal for Literature, a significant award in support of contemporary Arabic literature in translation, which will be presented to this year’s winner on the birthday of Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz in the presence of prominent leaders of Egypt’s cultural life.

The ceremony will be followed by a screening of short films based on Mahfouz’s book The Dreams of the Recovery Period (Ahlam Fatrat al-Naqaha), which transforms the hypnotic prose of Mahfouz’s later years into celluloid magic while also showing Alexandria, where most of the shots were filmed, at its most gorgeous. Amongst the films to be shown are:

A Line and A circle, directed by Mohsen Abd Elghany
Zakaria, directed by Emad Maher
Dream79, directed by Islam Kamal
Dream 195, directed by Sherif Naguib
May, 1926, directed by Tasnim Mostafa

Award Ceremony and Reception, Oriental Hall and Fountain Area, 6 pm (By invitation)
