In this conversation, we aim to illustrate the main challenges researchers face conducting research in Egypt and propose solutions that might effectively overcome similar challenges.

Associate Director of the Center for Migration and Refugee Studies

American University In Cairo

Maysa Ayoub is Political Sociologist specialized in Migration and Refugee Studies. She has over fifteen years of experience in research and teaching in the field of International Migration. At present, she holds the position of the Associate Director of the Center for Migration and Refugee Studies (CMRS) of the American University in Cairo (AUC). She has a PhD in Political Science from the Faculty of Economics and Political Science of Cairo University and an MA in Sociology as well as a post-graduate diploma in Migration studies from the American University in Cairo. Her PhD thesis analyzed the relationship between migration policies, public opinion, and media comparatively examining the policy response of European countries in the face of the Syrian refugee crisis of 2015. She researched and taught courses on Migration Policies, Integration and livelihoods of minorities, Diaspora and Transnationalism, Social problems in the Middle East and the Arab World, and Qualitative Research methodologies

Lameese Eldesouky, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at AUC. She received her BA in Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, and her AM and Ph.D. in Social/Personality Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University. She teaches foundational psychology courses, such as research methods, social psychology, and personality psychology, and conducts research on emotion. She is also the Faculty Advisor for AUC’s Psi Chi chapter and Chair of the Psychology Department’s Student Affairs Committee.

Assistant Professor, Department of Biology & Director, Biotechnology Graduate Program, SSE

Ahmed Abdellatif is an assistant professor of biology at the School of Sciences and Engineering at The American University in Cairo. He received an MSc and a Ph.D. from the University of Louisville, School of Medicine in Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology. He also earned an MBBCH and a master of science in anatomy and embryology from Alexandria University School of Medicine. Before joining AUC, he was the director of the biomedical sciences graduate program at Barry University in Florida. Abdellatif has been involved in curriculum design for medical education and taught medical and graduate courses in human anatomy, neurosciences, and human physiology.

Dr. Abdellatif’s research group at AUC is interested in the biomedical applications of natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds and their role in tissue repair in skin disorders, and diabetes. They are also studying various aspects of CNS disorders, such as aging, dementia, and other neurodegenerative diseases.
