The Arab world is most vulnerable to the catastrophic impacts of climate change. Water stress is only expected to worsen as the region holds 12 of the world’s most water-scarce states and less than 2% of global renewable freshwater resources. This makes the Arab world the driest region comparably. Soaring temperatures, climate shocks, droughts, economic instability, conflict and population growth pose severe challenges to water security in the regime, with far-reaching socio-economic and environmental implications. Finding ways to manage limited water resources and building on existing potential is more pressing than ever.
