The Arab region faces the grave challenges of climate change, with a long way to go in reversing its effects and moving to a renewable economy. This includes diversifying energy sources, setting targets for energy efficiency, and investing in new renewable sources such as solar, wind, and green hydrogen. However, the transition to renewable energy can be costly, and some even argue unnecessarily. Shifting to renewable energy can bring about new jobs, but it also shuts down others; solar power is sustainable but not affordable. Green hydrogen is promising but can be dangerous. In this panel, leading experts will discuss how Egypt and the region can move towards a just energy transition considering these different dilemmas.

This discussion centers around the opportunities and challenges of energy transition in the Arab world to unpack whether there is a “right energy mix” of renewable and nonrenewable sources and how the energy transition can be pursued justly in Egypt and the Arab world.
