How do we navigate a future which looks, unlike anything we’ve seen before? Ahead of COP27, and amongst bold calls for “Green Transitions” worldwide, how do we create strategies to address novel challenges like climate change without previous experiences to draw from?
In the energy sector, scenario planning–or telling stories about the future–has long helped answer these questions. This Futures Talk will explore how scenario planning helps us imagine a range of possible futures, thus gradually transforming the unknowable into the knowable. This Talk will also present how scenarios help to overcome collective biases and how recent events such as the COVID19 pandemic or geopolitical instability have challenged specific tenets of scenario building.
