Join this session of the Gerhart Center Webinar Series titled "Is Development Practice Delivering?" featuring Alan Fowler, honorary professor and chair in African philanthropy, Wits Business School, and professor emeritus, International Institute of Social Studies.

Does aided development work? Past answers and pre-COVID progress in realizing the Sustainable Development Goals give reason to doubt both efficacy and achievement. Using metaphors of chains and hourglasses, a reflective assessment of this oft-repeated question is critically explored by examining the relational setup and development practices that have evolved over many years.

About the Speaker:
Over some forty years across various institutions and roles, Alan Fowler's professional life has woven together hands-on involvement with different academic positions dedicated to international development. In addition to books, articles, presentations and membership on international boards, he has co-founded new development entities and designed and run practitioner courses in Africa, Asia and Europe. Currently resident in South Africa, Fowler is an honorary professor of African Philanthropy at the Wits Business School.
