"From Comprehension to Critique within Communities of Practice: Research-Based Strategies for Teaching Reading Across the Curriculum"

Abstract
Reading expectations change as students transition between and among disciplinary learning contexts. A history professor may want students to question assumptions in a narrative description of an event; a math professor may want students to read a text actively, completing and checking math problems as they read. Each discipline has different expectations, purposes, and values that determine how to engage with texts. Students often find this confusing, and faculty are sometimes not sure how to help them navigate these differences. In this talk, Meghan Sweeney will explore how the notion of communities of practice, taken as a framework for researching reading, supports the identification of threshold concepts that can be used to improve reading instruction in multiple ways, from enhancing comprehension to fostering critical reading practices.

Sweeney Bio
Meghan A. Sweeney is an Associate Professor of Rhetoric and Composition and the First-Year Writing Director at Saint Mary’s College of California, where she teaches postsecondary reading, writing program administration, and reading and writing pedagogies. Her research has been published in Research in the Teaching of English, Composition Studies, College Composition and Communication, Teaching English in the Two-Year College, Journal of General Education, Journal of Basic Writing, and Writing Program Administration. She is currently working on a monograph that will describe threshold concepts of reading across the curriculum.
