Syrian and Lebanese Crises in a Mirror
Details
The School of Global Affairs and Public Policy is holding its 95th Tahrir Dialogue virtual event titled Syrian and Lebanese Crises in a Mirror.
Syria has been in protracted conflict since 2011. This conflict affected Lebanon severely in many aspects. Lebanon entered a significant economic and financial crisis in 2019. Its effect on the decline of the Syrian pound exchange rate has been much more potent than eight years of conflict and destructions. The crises of the two countries seem today more tangled than ever, not only in terms of economy and finance. So is the case for the local political issues and the geopolitical dimensions necessary to end the conflicts and get both countries on the way of recovery.
The agreement on gas and electricity between Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon may constitute the first window of opportunity. The “New Sham” partnership between Iraq, Jordan and Egypt, enlarged to incorporate the “old Cham” (i.e., Syria and Lebanon), may constitute a basis for more.
However, are both Lebanese and Syrian States able to tackle their social, economic, regional and recovery challenges?
