The Graphic Design Program Presents: Paul Rand-The Idealist/Realist

Graphic design legend, Paul Rand, was among the most influential designers who led the American design reformation wave. When Rand died at eighty-two (1914-1996), his career had spanned six decades, three generations, and numerous chapters of design history. Twenty-five years after his passing, Nagla Samir and Daniel Lewandowski celebrate his work and legacy in the Middle East with a retrospective exhibition and book, with contributions by Jayme Odgers, Tom Hardy, Jessica Helfand, and Bob Burns, detailing Rand's extraordinary thoughts and processes.

A 'Conference' of design experts from the United States and Egypt and a design sprint is intended to exchange cultural knowledge between American and Egyptian designers. Speakers are from both countries, as are the participating panelists. They all share the common thread of 'design' honoring the historical significance of Paul Rand's work across cultures by addressing topics from his writings on design principles.

List of speakers and topics:
  • Steff Geissbühler will talk on 'Versatility of the Symbol'.
  • Mahamad Khalil, who will talk on 'Ideas about Ideas'
  • Oen Hammonds will talk about 'A Designer's Dilemma.'
  • Jr Neville Songwe, who will be discussing 'The Visual Cultural Identity.' Each speaker will be followed by a facilitated expert panel discussion on the topic, including audience participation.

All AUC community members are welcome to attend. Seats are limited, and seating is on a first arrive first-serve basis.
