This grant has been a work in progress between the Kamal Adham Center for Television and Digital Journalism and UNESCO since April 2020. The final agreement was recently signed in preparation to launch the project in September 2020. The project is primarily focused on conducting eight (8) webinars hosting a panel of experts. The webinars will address the following topics:
1. Truth, Trust and Journalism: Why They Matter in the Time of COVID-19
2. Thinking about Disinformation Disorder: Formats of Misinformation and Mal-information
3. New Industry Transformation: Digital Technology, Social Media Platforms and the Spread of Disinformation and Misinformation
4. Combating Misinformation and Disinformation through Media Information Literacy
5. Fact-Checking 101
6. Social Media Verification: Addressing Sources and Visual Content
7. Ensuring Journalists Safety When Reporting on COVID-19
8. Final Discussion: Developing a Unified Action to Address COVID19
These webinar topics are based on the UNESCO Handbook titled "Journalism, Fake News & Misinformation" published in multiple languages to address issues of misinformation, trust, and rumors in times of COVID19.

These webinars target Egyptian and Arab journalists, media professionals in both conventional and new media, as well as international organization and government representatives.
The webinars will bring together experts from the Egyptian and Arab media industry, academics as well as representatives of international organizations directly involved with COVID19 matters. The webinars will be conducted live via Zoom in Arabic with simultaneous interpretation into English and French. They will be interactive allowing for Q&A via the chat feature. The webinars will be recorded for later publishing on the UNESCO and AUC websites.

Dr. Hussein Amin, Director of the Kamal Adham Center for Television and Digital Journalism and the project's Principal Investigator, commented on this rich collaboration, “a meaningful project that comes in the right time and with the right partners for the right reasons. When the Adham Center at the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP), the American University in Cairo (AUC) collaborates with United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), an immense power of knowledge is created. This power is passed on to hundreds of journalists and media people in the region by offering specialized webinars about combating fake news and misinformation in relation to COVID19.
I have no doubt that it will help the media in the region play a better role in its ongoing challenge to raise awareness of fighting fake news, as well as its constant battle to provide accurate information to defeat a pandemic that is affecting the entire world.”

AUC President Francis Ricciardone will deliver opening remarks during the first webinar scheduled on September 16. Dr. Ghaith Fariz- Director, UNESCO Regional Bureau for Sciences in the Arab States; Dr. Ahmed Al Mandhari, Director, WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office; and Mr. Richard Dictus- United Nations Resident Coordinator in Egypt, will also deliver opening interventions during the first webinar.
